Hainan Island food and sketches

When visiting a new place, I love eating what the locals eat and going where the locals go. When we were in Hainan Island recently, we stumbled upon this little shop. It turned out to be a nice little adventure, and we had a really nice meal.

It was a simple noodle shop with a few tables on the street, in front of the shop.

They only had a Chinese menu, which we could not read. With my limited knowledge of the language, we managed to place our order. It turned out to be a really successful order :). The above is a bowl of noodle in spicy broth and meat. It was really good.

The bowl of wonton in soup was good too…

The above is a bowl of noodle with pickled vegetables. It was also really yummy.

Food Sketches

Sometimes during mealtimes, I have time to sketch; here are a few pages from my sketchbook:

Lunch with lots of colourful pickles.. (a rolled up towel is on the left – in case it’s not very recognisable)

Mango juice and tea. Curly straws like the one above are often used in cold drinks. The teapot like jar contained vinegar – a dipping sauce for dumplings.
