When night falls in Hong Kong

My point and shoot camera gave surprising good result in the dark

So many buildings are tall like these – they just go up and up!

 

Stunning nightlights...

A view from an open air restaurant on a 2nd floor veranda. Many old buildings - like the low one in the middle - still remain, surrounded by tall apartment blocks.

I would buy vegetables and fruits from these stalls if I cook; they look really juicy and fresh. The stalls begin operating in the late afternoon – a convenient time for office workers who are heading home to prepare dinner, as well as housewives looking for fresh produce.

A butcher shop

This is one of many stalls selling food on skewers, and this street food seems to be quite popular amongst the locals.

Oodles of noodles

 

There are noodle shops everywhere  in Hong Kong. We had noodles for breakfast (yes, breakfast!) one morning. Very satisfying!

Noodles are usually cooked to order.

Malaysian coffee

Local Malaysian coffee is served with sugar and evaporated milk. Ask for “kau” (literally means thick) and you are in for a real treat!

This is where I got the above coffee from. This is a modern shop but the decor reflects what coffee shops used to be in the good old days. There are many establishments like this and they are very popular, serving local Malaysian food and beverages.

Pulled tea

 

A popular local drink in Malaysia is teh tarik (translation: teh is tea and tarik is pulled). The name reflects how the tea is made. This can sometimes be quite a spectacle, with the hand pouring the hot tea extending high over the maker’s head, while the other hand holding a container to receive the tea is placed as low as possible. The continuous pouring of the tea over a distance looks like the tea is being pulled…

As a result, the tea is frothy at the top. It’s very sweet, but delicious.

Important role in life…

This simple bridge connects the people who live on the right of the stream to the little town on the left.

Tea Plantation in Cameron Highlands, Malaysia

I am currently in Cameron Highlands – about 3 hours drive from Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia. It is cool up here with temperature around mid-20 deg. C (around 75 deg. F).

The sky is usually cloudy, and it has rained a little everyday.  Here is a shot of the sky over the mountains and tea plantation in the foreground (click to enlarge).

Indoor Rainforest

This rainforest in inside a shopping centre in Malaysia. It felt like l had stumbled onto an oasis in the midst of the busy place. It was a weekday, and there were not many people about.

 

You can see a little bit of the shopping centre in the top right corner of the above photo; otherwise it felt like being in a secluded garden. The pond in the foreground is full of fishes. A wooden bridge is suspended over the water.

 

Hopefully the people in the photo gives you a sense of scale of the plants, especially the one on the right – it is taller than me. The wall at the back (top left corner) is shown in the next photo.

This vertical wall goes up a few stories

Finally, a photo of some fishes in the pond, with the roof structure and sky reflected on the water…

At a shopping centre in KL

There are many huge shopping centres with many levels and shops that one can easily get lost. But not for the average KL resident. Spending time at the shopping centres is a popular pastime.

I was quite excited when I stumbled upon this the other day; I’ve never seen such a colourful mushroom… it’s made me think of a world of fairies and little people living in mushrooms…

You should consider visiting the Convent Gallery, where you can ejoy the exhibitions, browse around the gift shop and have a break at the coffee house

Or walk around their lush garden

In autumn, you will be able to see beautiful colours  like this in their garden

Take a walk around the many  lovely parks in and around Daylesford

Bring your own picnic or stop by the coffee shop

And in town, you may want to stop by the chocolate shop for yummy chocolate milkshake (above) or hot chocolate. There are lots of chocolate truffles – lovely looking morsels that are extremely delicious satisfying.

Daylesford and Malaysia

Daylesford is about 90 minutes drive from Melbourne. We were there a few weekends ago. This is a beautiful time of the year to go there to see the beautiful colours of autumn.

Our walk took us around this beautiful lake. We were heading towards the restaurant that is shown in the middle of the photo, across the lake.

Now for a sharp contrast…

I arrived in Kuala Lumpur a few days ago. This lovely area by the stream looks like a nice quiet place, except that it is next to a really busy road. I find the juxtaposition interesting.
